5 People Hospitalized Following Fiery Crash, Police Chase in Danville

Early Saturday morning, a fiery crash and police chase in Danville resulted in five people being hospitalized. At 1 a.m., a Danville police officer attempted to pull over a car at Diablo Road and El Cerro Boulevard for running a red light. Unfortunately, the situation quickly escalated and resulted in a dangerous and devastating outcome when the car fled east on Diablo Road and onto Blackhawk Road. The frightening journey ended with a collision at an intersection five miles away when the driver, who ran a second red light, slammed into another motorist. The damage was extensive, and officials from the sheriff’s department were called to the scene.

The car had rolled onto its roof and smoke spread rapidly as it caught fire, catching the attention of many onlookers around a Starbucks close to the scene. One witness even claimed that the flames were so intense, they could feel the heat across the street.

All five victims were rescued from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities stated the two occupants of the second car were not hurt.

Folks could be seen Sunday evening slowly walking by the intersection, taking in the damage that still remained after the incident. While some remained silent, others opened up to NBC Bay Area and shared that they knew one of the local teens involved in the accident. Despite the severity of the situation, they were relieved to hear that the teen they knew was doing okay. While they preferred to remain unnamed, they did want to emphasize how miraculous it was that the injured party survived such a horrific accident.

The area was originally closed off as investigators worked to piece together what happened that day. The intersection has since been reopened and drivers can now proceed with caution.
