Alvin Monroe Killed In Motorcycle Accident at the 19th Street Station in Oakland

A motorcyclist was killed Friday afternoon after being hit by a BART train in Oakland. The incident occurred near 23rd Street and Northgate Avenue, where the Oakland underground tunnel ascends to an aerial track. The driver of the motorcycle hit a right-of-way barrier and was ejected onto the tracks, where they were hit by a moving train. The man was later identified as 35-year-old Alvin Monroe of Oakland. “BART PD and Oakland PD are working at the scene as they investigate this terrible tragedy,” BART said. The incident caused major delays in Downtown Oakland in the Antioch, Berryessa, Richmond and San Francisco directions Friday afternoon.

BART service was disrupted in both directions at 19th Street station in downtown Oakland, BART representatives confirmed to KRON4. Trains were not running through the West Oakland, MacArthur and Lake Merritt stations from the 19th Street station. Service was disrupted during the evening commute, when people are getting off work or heading out for a fri(sic) night. The impacts were significant, with trains having to be turned around and people being dumped off before their destination. There were also crowded platforms and people who couldn’t hear announcements. BART went on to apologize for the bad commutes as well as the challenges people had in hearing announcements.
