Motorcycle Accident Victim, Thomas Hampe Collides with Car Resulting in Death
Bicycle Accident Victim Killed on Highway 1 in the Half Moon Bay area
On June 25, Samantha Hartwell of Half Moon Bay was driving north on Highway 1 just south of Stage Road at 4:20 p.m. when she hit a bicyclist, identified as Thomas Hampe, 60, with the right side of her vehicle. Hampe, a Half Moon Bay resident, was knocked down an embankment and died almost immediately. Hartwell’s car was swerving and veered into oncoming traffic and struck a Subaru, seriously injuring the Subaru driver and the passenger. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office said that Hartwell is accused of hitting the bicyclist while driving under the influence of alcohol and with a suspended license. If convicted, Hartwell faces a maximum sentence of 8 years in prison. This tragic incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving and emphasizes the importance of obeying the law.
Hartwell, 31, is accused of driving while intoxicated and causing a car accident that killed Hampe. Hartwell reportedly had a blood alcohol level of .17 at the time of the accident. She is also accused of driving at 80 mph while going up a hill and swerving a few seconds before the accident. This is not Hartwell’s first brush with drunk driving; she has two prior convictions in San Mateo County from 2014. Hartwell’s driver’s license was suspended at the time of the incident. Witnesses at the scene saw the car accident but did not see Hampe get hit by Hartwell’s car.
