2 Killed, 2 Injured by Apparent Wrong-Way Crash in Los Altos Hills

Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when a young man driving a 2007 Honda Civic and an additional young female passenger were killed in a horrific crash on southbound Interstate Highway 280 in Los Altos Hills not far from El Monte Road. The incident occurred due to the wrong-way driver heading north on southbound 280, resulting in a head-on collision with a Toyota Avalon carrying 2 other male victims. This devastating incident took place so suddenly that California Highway Patrol dispatchers received two calls within minutes of each other, the first alerting them of the wrong-way driver, and the second informing them of the fatal accident that had already occurred.

The driver of the Honda , a 23-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 23-year-old man, both lost their lives in the wreck. The two men in the Toyota suffered major injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. According to CHP officers, it is believed that the driver of the Honda was under the influence at the time of the incident. However, further investigations are needed to confirm this, as a toxicology report is required.

The unexpected highway closure from the devastating accident caused quite a stir for commuters. California Highway Patrol officials were forced to close the southbound lanes of Highway 280 for the investigation. Those traveling the route had to be diverted off the freeway at El Monte Road, leading to extremely heavy traffic. But after diligent work from the CHP, all lanes were finally able open back up right before 6 a.m.

While the investigation continues, we are left to mourn the loss of these two young individuals and extend our deepest sympathies to their families during this difficult time.
