Pedestrian Struck By a Vehicle in San Francisco’s Mission District Resulting in Death

Tragedy struck San Francisco’s Mission District as a woman tragically passed away in a crash on Tuesday evening. According to the San Francisco Police Department, 64-year-old Wan Mei Tan was on foot when she was struck by a vehicle making a left turn at the intersection of Valencia Street and 16th Street around 5:51 pm. Fortunately, the driver involved in this incident stayed on the scene for questioning and police do not suspect any intoxication played a factor in the crash. Walk San Francisco, an organization whose goal is “to make San Francisco the most pedestrian-friendly city in the United States” according to its website, released a press statement regarding Tan’s death as another fatal crash has occurred less than two weeks before her death in the city.  Unfortunately, San Francisco has recently seen two tragic instances of vehicular fatalities in the span of just two weeks.

On New Year’s Day, a woman was killed in a hit and run incident at the Potrero Avenue and Alameda Street intersection. This happened just two weeks prior to a fatal crash on Tuesday that injured several people. Jodie Medeiros, executive director of Walk San Francisco, stated concerningly that these fatal collisions should be ringing alarm bells for city leaders, urging that traffic safety become the priority for 2023. 2019 is already on its way to becoming the most deadly year in San Francisco since 2014, with 19 pedestrian fatalities and 37 total casualties in traffic-related accidents thus far.
