Big-rig Towing Double Trailers Truck Collides with Multi-Vehicles Resulting in Injuries.

At about 7:43 a.m., five vehicles were involved in a collision on southbound I-680 north of Pacheco Boulevard. Some of the drivers suffered minor injuries. The collision caused a big rig to jack-knife and spill fuel on the freeway, shutting down traffic during the extensive cleanup. All southbound lanes of I-680 were closed along with a single northbound lane, which was taken out of service to enable repairs of the median concrete barrier. All lanes of Interstate 680 north of Concord reopened just before 4 p.m. Wednesday — nearly eight hours after the collision occurred. According to the CHP, no estimate was available Wednesday afternoon for when the remainder of the lanes would reopen. Officer Adam Lane advised that motorists avoid the area if possible.

One of the vehicles hit a big-rig towing double trailers, causing it to jack-knife. The collision punctured the big-rig’s fuel tank, spilling about 80 gallons of diesel fuel on the freeway. The fuel was contained to the pavement, CHP said. During the shutdown, drivers were advised to take Interstate 780 to Interstate 80 and then go over the Carquinez Bridge as an alternate route. Traffic backed up along I-780 but was returning to normal with moderate residual delays, according to the CHP.
