I just spent the last 8 months working with a team of caring, compassionate, relatable women for my personal injury claim. Brief background: I was hit by a car while riding my bike to work. The driver pulled out of a parallel parking space without looking and was completely at fault. Initially, he and the others in the car were very concerned, but ghosted us afterwards and made up a story in order to not take on the blame. I ended up needing surgery and costs mounted, so I sought legal advice. After much research, I settled on Sally Morin Law. The team at this law firm is invested and responsive in a very personable way. I specifically worked with Carmen and Annie. Carmen took the lead and she answered every email, text, and annoying question my husband and I sent her way. She wrote a detailed demand letter that personalized my case and thoroughly explained the impact the accident had on my life, my children's lives, and my husband's life. In the end, our own insurance policy covered the claim to the fullest amount. Additionally, Carmen was able to negotiate the medical lien to $0, and my husband received a separate smaller amount for loss of consortium. We are more than happy with the results as it’s way beyond what we expected, and completely life changing. We didn't proceed with the case thinking we would have the outcome we did, and almost didn't pursue the case. However, after spending my own money on copays, days off from work, take out, uber rides, babysitters, and special equipment, it just didn't feel right not to seek help and I am so glad that I did! I highly recommend Sally Morin Law!

Living in Oakland

It’s home to about 421,000 people and is within the top 50 most populous cities in the U.S. Oakland has an extremely high cost of living and is the 5th most expensive city in the nation, falling just behind another city within the top 5 most expensive places, San Francisco.

Costly housing is a major contributor to the expense of living in Oakland and the average rent here is a staggering $2273 per month. However, Oakland also has some of the area’s most beautiful and historic homes, most of which have easy pedestrian access to local coffee shops, food trucks, and retail stores.

People who live in Oakland enjoy an urban and suburban atmosphere with a vast array of options for nightlife and outdoor recreation. Oakland is known for being environmentally friendly, ethnically diverse, politically active, and very supportive of its successful sports teams. Dangerous Roadways and Intersections in Oakland

Like several other big cities in California, traffic congestion is a serious issue in Oakland. The city’s leaders have attempted to ease congestion through innovative environmentally-friendly efforts over the past 30 years, including the Oakland Slow Streets Project.

Vehicle Accidents in Oakland, California

Oakland Vehicle vs. Bicyclist Crash at 27th Street and West Street

What would you do if you were riding your bicycle and a car smashed into you? Or what if you were driving your vehicle and a cyclist seemed to come out of nowhere and hit you?

These crashes can be quite contentious and the two parties rarely agree about what happened. Here’s a vehicle vs. cyclist accident that occurred right here in Oakland, California. According to the traffic collision report from the California Highway Police, two officers arrived at an accident at 27th Street and West Street just after 10 a.m. on a Wednesday in January. The weather was clear.

At the accident scene, a bicyclist was laying on the ground in the lane of traffic. He appeared to be conscious, breathing, and not bleeding. The driver of a car that was also involved in the accident was nearby. The officers interviewed both people plus a witness.

The car’s driver told the officers she had been traveling south on West Street and had a green light to enter the intersection. She said she heard a thump on the right rear side of her vehicle but didn’t see anything. She continued driving, then turned around and came back.

The cyclist said he was traveling north on West Street along the right side of the roadway, then entered the intersection on a green light. He said he collided with the car when it made a left turn and cut him off. The witness stated that she was on the southwest corner of 27th Street and West Street when she observed the car collide with the cyclist. She said she couldn’t tell which way the cyclist had been traveling but saw him fall to the ground.

After taking these statements and ensuring the traffic signal was functioning correctly, the police officer cited the driver who hit the cyclist with a violation under California Vehicle Code 21801(A), failure to yield when making a left turn.

What do you think about the circumstances of this accident? Here in Oakland, the team at Sally Morin Personal Injury Lawyers has seen it all. We’ve handled cases where delivery trucks run over cyclists, hit-and-run drivers try to flee after horrific accidents and many other scary situations.

The good news is that we help our clients secure high-dollar settlements and awards. If you’re an injured driver or cyclist, don’t admit fault, don’t talk to the insurance company yet, and definitely don’t share anything on social media! Contact us for a free consultation about your crash case.

Two Vehicles Collide at 14th and Poplar in Oakland

At about 4 p.m. on an autumn Tuesday afternoon, a white Volvo S40 and a black Toyota Camry collided at an Oakland intersection. When a police officer arrived, both cars were sitting in the roadway on 14th Street near the intersection with Poplar Street.

The officer observed that the Volvo had sustained damage to the right rear door/axle area and was about to be towed away. He interviewed the Volvo’s driver, who said he was uninjured after the accident. The Volvo driver reported that he had been making a left turn from 14th Street onto Poplar Street when the Toyota struck the right rear of his car. This caused his car to swing from northbound to eastbound and his airbags deployed.

The officer interviewed the Toyota driver, a woman whose baby was inside the car in a car seat at the time of the accident. She said she had been westbound on 14th Street when the Volvo tried to make a quick left turn in front of her. She slammed on her brakes but couldn’t stop in time and hit the Volvo.

After the accident, the mother told the officer she had pain in her right arm but declined medical attention. The baby appeared to be calm, but the mother wanted the baby to go to the hospital to be checked for injuries. The Toyota was towed away at the officer’s instruction because it was impeding traffic.

The Volvo driver was cited under California Vehicle Code 21801(a) for failure to yield properly. The officer stated that it appears that the Volvo driver did not yield to the Toyota driver when making a left turn, causing the collision.

What if you or your child were injured in a collision like this? It’s your right under California law to demand compensation from the responsible party.

Uber Driver Collides with Pickup Truck at Busy Oakland Intersection

Here’s an example of a California traffic accident where each driver tells a very different version of what happened. The crash occurred in Oakland at the intersection of West Grand Avenue and Mandela Parkway on a Sunday in June just before 8 p.m.

The driver of the first vehicle, a grey 2008 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, told the investigating police officer that he was traveling west on Grand at about 25 to 30 miles per hour. As he approached the intersection with Mandela Parkway, he had a yellow light.

He said as he passed through the intersection, he hit a blue 2016 Mazda 6 that was turning in front of him. However, the Mazda driver’s testimony given to the police was vastly different.

The Mazda driver, who was driving for Uber at the time of the accident, said he was headed south on Mandela at about 35 to 40 miles per hour and entered the intersection with Grand on a green light. Then he felt the pickup truck impact his car hard on the rear driver’s side.

Both vehicles sustained moderate to major damage and were towed from the scene. The pickup truck driver told the officer he was uninjured in the crash and the Mazda driver said he felt pain in his neck and chest.

After investigating the accident, the officer concluded that it was caused by a failure to stop at a red light but it was unknown which driver failed to stop. The officer concluded the report by saying, “Unable to determine party at fault for collision.”

What if I’m Not Sure Whether I Have a Case?

Not sure if you have a case? No worries! We can help you understand your options. If you’re wondering whether you have a case for compensation after a serious accident with injuries, read on.

In Oakland, if you are injured by another individual, corporation, or government entity, you are legally entitled to collect monetary compensation in an amount suitable to cover your expenses and damages. Of course, compensation is never guaranteed. Expect the other party to fight it.

Generally speaking, you can pursue compensation:

Working together with an experienced Oakland personal injury lawyer, you can demonstrate the legitimacy of your injuries, show that someone was negligent, and request reimbursement for medical costs and other hardships. The team at Sally Morin Personal Injury Lawyers will help you stand up to difficult people and demand what you deserve.

Your attorney can help you secure and maximize your compensation by making a case for your financial losses and damages related to your injuries. Although it’s possible to do this without a lawyer’s help, we don’t advise it. You’re already trying to rest and heal from your injuries, so a lawyer serves the vital role of moving your case forward so you can let go of all the legal stress.

What Kind of Compensation Could I Recover?

You may be wondering what kind of compensation you could receive in your Oakland case. Although compensation varies depending on the situation, you can start by looking at how you’ve been hurt in the accident. Most injury cases only cover two categories of damages if you can prove them.

  • Special damages: Your special damages may include car loss, property damage, medical bills, and lost earnings.
  • General damages: Your general damages are more abstract and may include pain, inconvenience, distress, loss of hobbies, and loss of a lifestyle with your loved ones.

Think about this question: How have you suffered from your accident? Talk to your lawyer about the losses you have suffered that are impacting your life. The better case you can put together, the better chance you have at receiving high-value compensation.

Bicycle Accident on Snake Road at Skyline Boulevard in Oakland

It’s taken me a while to write this review, not because I lack motivation; rather, I wanted to make sure that my comments were thoughtful and accurately reflected my absolute satisfaction with Sally, Janai, and the entire team who devoted much time and attention to my case. In the same way that they took care to ensure that (1) my interests were at the forefront, (2) communicated with me regularly and accurately, and (3) demonstrated true concern and care for me as a person, I wanted to be sure that everyone knew how happy I am with the process and the results. I would unequivocally and resolutely recommend Sally!

Nicolas K.

Car Accident on 14th Street at Poplar Street in Oakland

We found Sally Morin and her team through Yelp and now after our case has been settled better than we could have ever imagined we are very happy to give her 5 stars just like everybody else does. Her whole team is beyond friendly and knowledgeable and they are just wonderful people, they have attention to detail and are very personal and prompt in their answers. They also did a great job of making the terminology of their trade understandable to us and they kept fighting for a good settlement instead of going for the easy route. They don’t have to have billboards or cheesy TV ads because they get more than enough work through referrals from clients like us.

Motorcycle Hit by Car While Lane-Splitting on the 80 near Powell Street Exit

So, I was in a pretty bad motorcycle accident that was clearly not my fault. Long story short, after months of dealing with multiple insurance companies and various law firms, we finally settled for an amount much larger than I would have ever dreamed. I attribute the success completely to Sally and her office. The process went smooth and relatively quickly (personal injury suits can take a long time), and she was extremely responsive and proactive. I’ve grown to really respect Sally and what she does after admittedly being skeptical of lawyers in general. Sally really cares about coming to a reasonable and beneficial result for her clients and not just for herself!
