How Likely Are You to be Hit By a Car in Los Angeles?
Being hit by a car in Los Angeles is something you’d never plan for.
It’s not like any of us leave home expecting to be involved in a car accident on our way to work, school, or the corner market. But with over 50,000 car crashes within LA city limits alone last year, Los Angeles is one of the most dangerous municipalities for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists in the entire nation. In fact, you’re odds of being injured in a car crash in Los Angeles are about 1 in 75.
Sadly, our city is getting even more dangerous in spite of the massive public safety investments and outreach campaigns LA has initiated.
Vision Zero Hasn’t Decreased the Number of People Hit By Cars in Los Angeles
2016 was the first full year that Los Angeles’s ambitious Vision Zero (the plan to reduce traffic fatalities by 20% by 2020) was in effect. The city spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of work hours on the project but it hasn’t shown any appreciable benefit. In fact, it has done nothing to decrease the number of traffic accidents in Los Angeles.
According to stats reported by the LA Times, there were more people struck and killed by cars in Los Angeles in 2016 than there were in 2015—many more. The number of fatal car accidents in Los Angeles spiked last year, jumping 43%. (That’s almost eight times higher than the national average increase!) And in 2017 that sad statistic is on its way toward capping out 25% higher than last year.
But even that figure is tiny compared to the number of people injured in car accidents is. Some conservative estimates put the number of victims around 50,000 per year in Los Angeles alone! And that doesn’t count all of the minor injuries that victims don’t feel the need to report.
Types of Injuries Victims Suffer After Being Hit by Cars
In Los Angeles, speed is one of the top contributing factors to car accidents. Indeed, nationwide speed contributes to nearly 1/3 of all car crashes. Speed also magnifies the impact of a vehicle and can multiply the force applied to your body in the event of a crash. That means that your injuries will likely be more grievous—possibly life-threatening.
Indeed, the types of injuries doctors most often see in victims after being hit by a car in Los Angeles include:
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Fractures (most commonly in the arms, legs, and skull)
- Soft-Tissue Injuries (including whiplash)
- Disfigurement (caused by broken glass and other flying debris)
Even the mildest of these types of injuries can have long-lasting after effects, require months or even years of recovery, and can leave injured individuals struggling to put their life back together forever. But, if you’ve been hit by a car in Los Angeles, you don’t have to struggle alone.

How Car Insurance Works After You’ve Been in an Accident
The first (and often easiest) way to get compensation is to file a claim against the at fault party’s insurance. While these companies will try to pay you as little as possible, you can fight back and, if necessary, even take your case to court. If the driver is uninsured or under-insured, things may get a little more complicated. You may have to rely on your own insurance.
All auto insurance companies in Los Angeles offer uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist. Under California law these policies are included in standard insurance coverage and unless you specifically decline them, you’re covered.
In such cases, your insurance company acts in the stead of the at fault driver’s own. If the other driver has no insurance at all, your policy should cover the cost of all your injuries. If the driver’s policy doesn’t offer enough coverage to pay for your medical expenses, your policy should “make up the difference.”
Contact a Car Accident Attorney
If you’ve been hit by a car in Los Angeles you need an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney on your side. While the at fault party’s insurance company will often pay without hesitation, your injuries could be worth much more than they offer you. Worse yet, those settlements may not include all of your expenses like lost wages, therapy (both physical and emotional), or prescription costs.
Having an experienced Los Angeles car accidents attorney on your side gives you the leverage you need to get a just settlement or financial award that befits the injuries you’ve suffered.
