Living in Hayward

Hayward is an urban/suburban city in California’s Alameda County with a population of about 158,000. It has a very ethnically and culturally diverse population and most adults have higher levels of education than average. Several world-famous landmarks are in this area, including the Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, and the historic cable car system.

Although Hayward is a thriving city with a bustling atmosphere, some people find it difficult to make a living here. Housing is expensive, many art and cultural activities come with high price tags, local restaurant prices are high, and there is intense competition for jobs in the area.

Hayward is considered one of the Bay area’s most affordable places, but only in comparison to San Francisco. Hayward’s cost of living is 65% higher than the U.S. average and to rent or buy a house, you can expect to pay 100% more than the average American pays or more.

But you sure can’t beat the warm climate and beautiful bay views in Hayward. The city has an outdoorsy-meets-city vibe with ample recreational and entertainment opportunities on almost every corner. That’s part of the reason why Hayward has the motto, “You are here. So’s everything else.”

Dangerous Roadways in Hayward

The Hayward area has a high level of traffic accidents. The Accident Data Center, which tracks pedestrian and vehicle accidents across the U.S., shows that Hayward has numerous severe injuries and deaths every year.

You may remember seeing some of these in the news, including a police officer who was killed along I-880 while on patrol for drunk drivers, a motorcyclist who was run over by a trucker on I-880, and a 75-year-old pedestrian who was hit and crushed to death by a driver on Hampton Road in Hayward.

Over the years, San Francisco has been named fifth-worst and second-worst city for aggressive driving and Hayward isn’t far behind on the same list. Our area has several cities that are among the nation’s most aggressive city drivers, including Hayward, San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles.

Some of the most dangerous areas include:

  • Interstate I-880/Nimitz Freeway
  • I-880/Nimitz Freeway at Jackson Street
  • I-880/Nimitz Freeway at W. Winton Avenue
  • Interstate 580
  • Interstate interchange at I-580 and I-238 that includes Mattox Road and Castro Valley Boulevard
  • 185/Jackson Street intersection with A Street, D Street, and 238/Mission Boulevard/Foothill Boulevard
  • 185/238/Mission Boulevard
  • 92/Jackson Street

Traffic Accidents in Hayward

Hayward Cyclist Suffers Broken Ankle When Motorist Hits Her

On a summer Sunday afternoon in Hayward, California, a vehicle vs. bicycle collision left a cyclist with a broken ankle. It happened about 1:20 p.m. near the intersection of Second Street and C Street, according to the police officer who responded to the crash.

If you’ve ever traveled through this intersection, you’ve seen that it’s one of the area’s busiest and most dangerous intersections for vehicle and bicycle traffic. Second Street is a wide, six-lane north/south road, and C Street has two lanes westbound and one lane eastbound.

The cyclist said that at the time of the accident, she was traveling northbound on the eastern sidewalk of Second Street approaching C Street. She rode her bicycle into the crosswalk when a white Mazda 3 sedan made a left turn into the crosswalk and struck her.

The Mazda driver said she was driving southbound on Second Street approaching C Street in the left-turn lane and had the green light. She said she didn’t see the cyclist in the crosswalk, attempted to stop, couldn’t stop in time, struck the cyclist, and then immediately stopped to check on the cyclist’s condition.

The officer observed no damage to the Mazda but saw that the bicycle had front-wheel damage. The cyclist said she had a broken left ankle and sought medical care.

After investigating the accident, the officer cited the cyclist under California Vehicle Code 21202(a), which states that cyclists moving below the normal speed of traffic should travel as close as practicable to the right curb unless overtaking, preparing for a left turn, or when reasonably necessary to avoid dangerous conditions ahead.

What if you were the injured cyclist in an accident like this? Just because the officer cited you with a violation doesn’t mean the motorist is completely off the hook! You can still start a civil claim to cover your injuries under California’s comparative negligence rule.

What if I’m Not Sure Whether I Have a Case?

It’s normal to wonder whether or not you have a case. Our Hayward personal injury lawyers can help you understand your options and decide how to move forward with your personal injury case. When you are injured by another individual, corporation, or government entity, you are legally entitled to collect monetary compensation in an amount suitable to cover your expenses and damages.

But your compensation is never guaranteed. You’ll have to make a strong case, and you can expect the other party to fight it. That’s why you need legal representation from a personal injury lawyer who gets results and can help you win your case!

Here in Hayward, California, you can pursue compensation in three ways, generally speaking:

With the experience and wisdom of your personal injury lawyer, you can demonstrate the legitimacy of your injuries, show that someone was negligent, and request reimbursement for medical costs and other hardships. The team at Sally Morin Personal Injury Lawyers will help you stand up to difficult people and demand what you deserve.

We can help you maximize your compensation by making a case for your financial losses and damages related to your injuries. Although it’s possible to do this without a lawyer’s help, we don’t advise it. You’re already trying to rest and heal from your injuries, so a lawyer serves the vital role of moving your case forward so you can let go of all the legal stress.

What Kind of Compensation Could I Recover?

Your compensation depends on the circumstances of your accident. In terms of what kind of compensation you could receive, start by looking at how you’ve been hurt in the accident. Most injury cases only cover two categories of damages if you can prove them.

  • Special damages: Your special damages may include car loss, property damage, medical bills, and lost earnings.
  • General damages: Your general damages are more abstract and may include pain, inconvenience, distress, loss of hobbies, wrongful death and loss of a lifestyle with your loved ones.

Talk to your lawyer about the losses you suffered that are impacting your life. The better case you can put together and the more evidence you have, the better chance you have at receiving high-value compensation.
