5-Year-Old Boy and His Grandmother Killed in Violent Wrong-Way Crash in Van Nuys

Tragedy struck on Thursday night in Van Nuys when a wrong-way driver collided with another car on Woodley Avenue. Officials have confirmed that the two victims of the horrific crash were 74 year old Aura de la Cruz Calderon de Tobar and her 5-year-old grandson, Yeshua Elijah Cordova Tobar. The grandmother and grandson along with two other passengers were traveling in a gray Honda Civic when a white Honda Accord crossed into oncoming traffic and struck their car.

Investigators report that the suspect, who remains unidentified, was driving under the influence when they collided with the family’s vehicle. Anna Calderon, who is the mother of the boy and the daughter of the woman involved in the accident, is heartbroken by the incident. Calderon spoke with Eyewitness News on Wednesday to describe the horrors she witnessed as her young son lay injured on the street. Also in the vehicle were Calderon’s mother, who was visiting from El Salvador, and the boy’s stepsister and her boyfriend. All were injured in the accident.

The heart-wrenching tragedy of losing a child is unimaginable for any parent. Roldan Cordova still questions what happened to his beloved son and feels like he has lost his own life along with him. Yeshua’s mother fondly remembers the spirited and happy moments of her son’s life, filled with soccer games and admiration for Super Mario brothers. Losing a child is an incomparable pain, and as the investigation into the collision proceeds, the family has started a GoFundMe page.

The devastating impact of driving under the influence cannot be overstated. It tears families apart and leaves them to bear an incomprehensible burden. Tiffany Feder, a close family friend, expressed that sentiment when she commented on the recent tragedy. She remarked that the whole situation could have been avoided if only the driver responsible had made a different choice. Though nothing can replace the loss the family has incurred, we hope that the outpouring of support and encouragement from everyone helps them get through this difficult time.
